Water for Elephants was nowhere near my summer booklist, but it must be on added to yours!
Not since I’ve read The Poisonwood Bible have I been more interested in characters in a book than I have in my recent read, Water for Elephants. Water for Elephants has it all. It has romance, glamour, murder, and opens us up to an era and world that is compelling and vibrant! This book will have you engrossed in it from the very first pages and right on through to its fabulous ending!! You will be completely satisfied with this wonderful ending!
The author, Sara Gruen, is amazingly detailed and draws out vivid images from her writing. I could see what the characters saw and I could feel what they felt!! I loved how she would take us back and forth between the main character’s (Jacob) present time in the retirement center to his past days traveling with The Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show On Earth. It was intriguing how he found his way to the circus train and how, in many ways, he is forced to stay on with them, until necessity to leave and chaos comes into play. All the characters are fully developed and the book wouldn’t be the same with out one of them…including and Rosie, an elephant who ends up being the silent heroine of the book.
I haven’t read a book this well written in years! It was full of excitement on each and every page and there was never a moment, while reading, that my mind wandered off. I simply wanted to keep going and going. It was a great book to immerse yourself in.
This is a perfect book for the summer!! What a great escape! You will feel like you’re on the edge of your seat through it’s entirety and after you’ve read the last page you will be left completely satisified.
I don't want to give away the story....all I want to say is READ IT!
Go read it now before the movie comes out (it’s being made now, staring Reese Witherspoon)!
